Iran unveils unusually colored blue submarine

The Iranian Navy's unusually colorful new Sina 7 submarine (AP)It looks like the Iranian Navy really wanted people to see its new submarine. On a live broadcast from Iran state TV on Wednesday, the Islamic Republic showed off a new Sina 7 submarine that is painted in an unusually bright turquoise blue hue.

So, why exactly would any military want to design its ship in a color that is so easily visible to the human eye? The Daily Mail speculates that the color tone may have been mistakenly chosen by the ship's designers, believing that it would help the craft blend in with the ocean's waters.

Launched from Bandar Abbas, near the Strait of Hormuz, Iran says the Sina-7 and two Ghadir class submarines represent the first wave of the country's "indigenously built" warships.

"Since the beginning of the Islamic Revolution, we have learned not to ask for help from other countries and stand on our own feet in meeting our demands," Iranian navy commander?Habibollah Sayyari said during the broadcast.

"Thanks to the Islamic Revolution, Iran has acquired the know-how to build submarines. No one believed that we would reach a point where we would build destroyers capable of carrying helicopters and missiles in the Sea of Oman and oceans ? because it's a very difficult task to build destroyers and submarines."

The Sina 7 is reportedly capable of firing anti-ship missiles, which the Iranian government says is a centerpiece of its new defense strategy.

Two repaired hovercraft vehicles were also showcase during the broadcast.

Could Bill Clinton be getting a new job in Washington?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, has suffered a stroke but is OK and resting in a Las Vegas hospital, a family friend said on Thursday. "He was doing well and says he's feeling OK," close family friend Brian Oxman told Reuters. Oxman, Michael Jackson's one-time attorney, said the 83-year-old patriarch of the pop music family started experiencing weakness on Wednesday while walking in a park near his home and was later admitted to a hospital. Jackson has a history of strokes, Oxman said. "He was talking fine," Oxman added. "He sounded excellent to me." A former ...

Girlfriends Book Club: 5 Game-Changing Gifts for Writers

By Karin Gillespie
??When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.? Long ago, when I first read the statement above, I imagined an encounter with a big-bellied, toga-wearing monk who would whisper the secrets of the universe into my ear. Over the years?I've?learned you don?t necessarily need a monk to show you the way. If you?re open to it, wisdom comes in many guises, such as advice from a friend, a passage in a book, an overheard conversation or even a sudden insight. What follows are the valuable writing gifts I have received over the years. Depending on where you are in this journey, they may or may not resonate with you, but each one was precious to me and changed my way of thinking about my craft. Since I was a little girl I always dreamed of being a writer but it?wasn't?until I started doing daily morning pages that I gained the courage to face the blank page. ?And what are morning pages? Simply, first thing when you wake up in the morning, you write longhand in a notebook for twenty minutes without stopping. It?s best if you practice morning pages for two or three months and you?shouldn't?read what?you've?written until much later. ?The Artist?s Way by Julia Cameron popularized morning pages but?they've?been around for decades. Morning pages train your subconscious to write. It coaxes out the muse, and, trust me, the practice is utterly magical. Morning pages work best with new writers or writers who have abandoned the craft for a while. Storytelling is a skill separate from writing beautiful sentences and Blake Snyder, author of ?Save the Cat Strikes Back!? explains plotting in the most eloquent and accessible way possible. After reading his book, I knew I would never again plot myself into a corner or abandon a project because of structural problems.? Although his work is written in a breezy style, there?s something very elemental and old-world about Snyder?s approach. He died a couple of years ago, and even though he was a successful screenwriter, I think his insightful how-to books were his true legacy. I recommend all of his books but if you were only to buy one, I?d get ?Save the Cat Strikes Back.? In addition to giving structural advice, he shares the very personal story of how he changed his writing life around. An inspiring man who will be missed. Former Girlfriend April Henry turned me on to this incredible yet simple technique. Basically you write for twenty-five minutes, no interruptions, and then take a five minute break. Repeat as many times as necessary. This method has increased my focus ten-fold. I no longer worry about being distracted by the Internet or e-mail, because during each twenty-five minute period, you trick the brain to attend only to the writing. Here?s more about the Pomodoro technique if I?ve piqued your interest. Rachel Aaron?s Amazing Productivity Method Recently I decided I wanted to write first drafts faster, and I ran across author Rachel Aaron's advice on that very topic. Using her method, I easily upped my daily word count from 2,000 words a day to 3,000. (Accomplished in a four-hour time period with brief breaks) The secret? Aaron suggests writing a brief summary of what you?re going to write each day before plunging in. ?Her advice should be worth a $1,000 it helped me so much. But I only spent $.99 on her book. Thank you, Rachel Aaron! XOXO A recent insight about the writing game Once during one of the best performances of his life, Laurence Olivier came off the stage and was approached by a reporter who was bowled over by his mastery. Olivier acknowledged he?d done well, but he also said, ?I don?t know if I can ever repeat it, because it did not come from me.? The more I write, the more I understand that the best writing is achieved when I leave my ego outside the writing room, and surrender to my unconscious mind.

?If I show up every day, the muse will arrive, and if I?m humble and understand that I?m only a conduit or co-creator at best, then good writing will almost always result. When I?m co-creating, the supply of ideas are endless, and I never get stale. Maybe this gift was the most important one of all.

So those are the?best gifts?I've?received in over twenty years of writing, and I hope at least one will speak to you. And since it?s the gift-giving season, I would love to hear the valuable insights you have received during your writing life. I?m always looking to add a few more to my treasure chest.?????

Metabolic protein launches sugar feast that nurtures brain tumors

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have tracked down a cancer-promoting protein's pathway into the cell nucleus and discovered how, once there, it fires up a glucose metabolism pathway on which brain tumors thrive.

They also found a vital spot along the protein's journey that can be attacked with a type of drug not yet deployed against glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and lethal form of brain cancer. Published online by Nature Cell Biology, the paper further illuminates the importance of pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) in cancer development and progression.

"PKM2 is very active during infancy, when you want rapid cell growth, and eventually it turns off. Tumor cells turn PKM2 back on - it's overexpressed in many types of cancer," said Zhimin Lu, M.D., Ph.D., the paper's senior author and an associate professor in MD Anderson's Department of Neuro-Oncology.

Lu and colleagues showed earlier this year that PKM2 in the nucleus also activates a variety of genes involved in cell division. The latest paper shows how it triggers aerobic glycolysis, processing glucose into energy, also known as the Warburg effect, upon which many types of solid tumors rely to survive and grow.

"PKM2 must get to the nucleus to activate genes involved in cell proliferation and the Warburg effect," Lu said. "If we can keep it out of the nucleus, we can block both of those cancer-promoting pathways. PKM2 could be an Achilles' heel for cancer."

By pinpointing the complicated steps necessary for PKM2 to penetrate the nucleus, Lu and colleagues found a potentially druggable target that could keep the protein locked in the cell's cytoplasm.

MEK, ERK emerge as targets

The process begins when the epidermal growth factor connects to its receptor on the cell surface. This leads to:

  • Activation of the MEK protein, which in turn activates ERK.
  • ERK sticking a phosphate group to a specific spot on PKM2.
  • Phosphorylation priming PKM2 for a series of steps that culminate in its binding to the protein importin, which lives up to its name by taking PKM2 through the nuclear membrane.

Once in the nucleus, the team showed that PKM2 activates two genes crucial to aerobic glycolysis and another that splices PKM RNA to make even more PKM2.

An experiment applying several kinase-inhibiting drugs to human glioblastoma cell lines showed that only a MEK/ERK inhibitor prevented EGF-induced smuggling of PKM2 into the nucleus. ERK activation then is mandatory for PKM2 to get into the nucleus.

"MEK/ERK inhibitors have not been tried yet in glioblastoma multiforme," Lu said. Phosporylated PKM2 is a potential biomarker to identify patients who are candidates for MEK/ERK inhibitors once those drugs are developed.

MEK inhibitor blocks tumor growth

The researchers also found that the two glycolysis genes activated by PKM2, called GLUT1 and LDHA, are required for glucose consumption and conversion of pyruvate to lactate, crucial factors in the Warburg Effect. Depleting PKM2 in tumor cell lines reduced glucose consumption and lactate production.

In mice, depleting PKM2 blocked the growth of brain tumors. Re-expressing the wild type protein caused tumors to grow. However, re-expression of a PKM2 mutant protein that lost its ability to get into the nucleus failed to promote tumor formation. Experiments in human glioblastoma cell lines showed the same effect.

Injecting the MEK inhibitor selumetinib into tumors inhibited tumor growth, reduced ERK phosphorylation, PKM2 expression and lactate production in mice. In 48 human tumor samples, the team found that activity of EGFR, ERK1/2 and PKM2 were strongly correlated.

Cause of PKM2 overexpression

Lu and colleagues also published a paper in Molecular Cell that revealed a mechanism for overexpression of PKM2 in glioblastoma. They found that EGF receptor activation turns on NF-?B, which leads to a series of events culminating in PKM2 gene activation.

PKM2 levels were measured in tumor samples from 55 glioblastoma patients treated with standard of care surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The 20 with low PKM2 expression had a median survival of 34.5 months, compared to 13.6 months for the 35 patients with high levels of PKM2.

Level of PKM2 expression in 27 low-grade astrocytomas was about half of the expression found in higher grade glioblastomas.

"In these two papers, we show how PKM2 is overexpressed in tumors, how it gets into the nucleus, that nuclear entry is essential to tumor development, and identified potential drugs and a biomarker that could usefully treat people," Lu said.

Setting Up A Home Based Business? Check Out These Tips! | Mike ...

Starting a business from home sometimes seems like a dream, but it can be a reality with plenty of hard work and research. The truth is, that many people are trying to sell you on the idea of working from home. It is possible for you to make viable income from home, but it takes time and patience. This article offers a few suggestions to get you started.

TIP! Even if you are guaranteed results from a program you try, be aware that success will not come overnight. It is going to take time to make a success out of any home business.

If you decide to take a risk and go with a guaranteed business, don?t think that you will be rich overnight. Being successful at creating a home business is a process that can take a while. Stay committed and dedicated to making your business a success, and one day, you will realize your dreams.

Be sure to keep an open line of communication with your customers without going overboard. Newsletters and emails can help you reach your customers. However, do not abuse their trust by overwhelming them with a constant barrage of messages.

Your work from home business should be based on a detailed, thorough business plan. Your business plan may change a little or a great deal over time. However, a well-written business plan offers valuable guidance and creates a sense of purpose and direction for your business. Make sure your business plan is up to date.

TIP! Take a break during your work day to have a good laugh. Laughing lowers blood pressure, revives your respiratory system and provides a feeling of well being and happiness.

If you create and sell a product, calculate how much it costs you to create it, as you want to make a profit. To determine the wholesale price increase, multiply your cost by two. Retail buyers usually pay twice what it was purchased from wholesalers for. You will need to price the item accordingly, so that you can be sure that you are making a profit off of the sale of the product.

Look for price ranges for a product in today?s market before you start trying to sell. Set your prices based off competitor evaluations so you can be competitive in your offering. Talking negatively about another business is bad for your own, so focus on making your good qualities stand out instead.

TIP! Any home business should utilize all of the tax deductions that are applicable to their situation. Claiming all the deductibles you can will save you quite a bit of money.

If you are just beginning to establish relationships in your business, you may consider excusing some laxity in your customers? payment habits. However, this can significantly reduce your profits. It would be wise to state a clear payment term for all your invoices and documents, including late payment fees.

In order to succeed at being a home based business owner, you have to be able to take knowledge-based risks to broaden your horizons. Keeping your marketing efforts diverse is the best way to reach the widest audience. Sticking to tried and true strategies is fine, but don?t be afraid to mix it up and see what works.

TIP! You should always have a good business plan for your home business. You may change the business plan over time, or you might even completely disregard it.

Offer multiple ways for customers to contact you, including email, telephone and even traditional mail. Keep up with your contacts. Find out what purchases they made by asking plenty of questions. You may have guided the customer into purchasing your product due to the answer that you provided, so keep this up your sleeve for future occasions.

Support yourself and your business with online forums visited by other people who have home businesses. There is a vast quantity of websites and forums that are targeted towards the home based business owner. The support and guidance they can provide is often invaluable. There are many people just like you on these forums, and their advice can help you get the most out of your online business.

TIP! People like a way to connect with the people who run a business, so make sure you provide a phone, mailing address or email address for potential customers. Always retain a statement of whom continued to purchase your goods or services after seeking answers and keep a log of the conversation when possible.

You must determine how much you are going to price your merchandise for. When manufacturing your own products, you have to determine the costs. The generally accepted formula to deduce the price that the customer will pay is to double the cost that you pay for the merchandise. That is how much you charge to buy your product wholesale. The retail price should be set at three times the cost.

As you have just learned, there are many people trying to sell you on scams. However, as you?ve learned throughout this article, there are also many common-sense tips and tactics that you can use in order to grow your work from home business. If you?re willing to put in the work, you can certainly be successful.

With regards to some additional critical information, take a look at this specific complete discussion Blogging For Beginners because what you may discover will help to increase your personal business and give you new insights into Home Business.

Carlton Arranges $324M Recapitalization for Four Seasons Hotel ...

November 27, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor?

Carlton Group has orchestrated quite a deal for the Four Seasons Hotel Milan in Italy. Acting on behalf of international real estate holding company Statuto Group, the real estate investment banking firm closed an approximately $324 million financing package consisting of the recapitalization of the 118-room luxury hotel and a discounted loan payoff.

It?s a high-profile transaction for a high-profile property. Housed in a restored former 15th-century convent in Milan?s Montenapoleone district, the Four Season?s Milan made a big splash on the international real estate radar in 2006, when Statuto purchased the asset from Quinlan Private in a $242 million deal that set a world record for the largest hotel transaction in terms of price per room.

Six years later, Four Seasons Milan is turning heads again with the completion of its recapitalization in what is presently a highly challenging capital markets environment in Europe. Undaunted, Carlton persevered for six months and ultimately succeeded in securing a London-based money manager to provide the capital and facilitate Statuto?s purchase of its loan from the financial institution holding the debt on hotel.? The end result: Statuto remains owner of Four Seasons Milan, having addressed financing issues without adding new equity investors.

It was no simple feat, but there may be more such deals to come. ?This transaction is a precursor to other discounted loan payoffs which will inevitably occur, now that financial institutions with European exposure look to monetize underwater loans,? said Howard L. Michaels, chairman of Carlton in a prepared statement.

According to a third-quarter report by Prudential Real Estate Investors, European banks are still holding approximately 10 percent of their loan books against commercial real estate, and thereby, ?remain at risk from the deteriorating economic outlook.?

The art of drinking ?un caffe'? ? Flo'N The Go

By?Julia Engelbrecht (Kent State Unviersity)

?Vorrei un panino e un caffe macchiato, per favore?

The barista exchanges a perplexed look, and awkwardly continues with the request. After only being in Florence for a few short days, her reaction to my order seemed rude.

I continue to eat the panino and drink the caffe macchiato, as locals seemed to give the same perplexed look at my choice of lunch.

Little did I know, the difference between taking coffee in the Italy and the United States differs widely.

After two and a half months of residing in the city of renaissance, the differences relating to everything and anything ?caffe? are clearer than ever.

In the United States, coffee can be taken anywhere, anytime, with any kind of food. A preliminary mistake is one with drinking a coffee with a meal. While a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte may be the perfect addition to an egg over easy with a piece of toast at 4 pm in the afternoon, in Italy that is not the case.

Although I personally will always enjoy a hot, venti-sized pumpkin spice latte at anytime of the day, the Italian explanation makes perfect sense. After a discussion concerning the ways in which Italians take coffee, a professor put it in the simplest of terms: caffe is sweet (when sugar is added), but lunchtime food, such as a panino or an egg, is salty. It just doesn?t make sense to mix those two flavors.

That being said, there is always room for a coffee throughout the day, but only after a meal to help digest the food that was just eaten. If a cappuccino is ordered, that may still deserve a confused expression from the waiter.

As a student in Florence, I was told that it is unacceptable to drink a cappuccino after 11am. Whether or not this is true, I still order cappuccinos later in the day, and thankfully have not received any dirty looks just yet.

One of the many upsides to having Italian coffee is the plethora of places to find coffee, which are called bars. Every corner you turn, you can count on a red-neon sign with the word ?bar?, convincing you that yes, you do need a coffee right now, even though had one a mere hour ago. The people standing at the counter that seem to be crowded around in no organized fashion are not just hogging the space, they are simply drink their morning coffee as an Italian would, standing at the bar.

This is a concept that took some time to adjust to. In the United States, the coffee is either for takeaway, or consumed at a table with a copy of the New York Times.

After some thought, it is clear that the Italians have found the perfect balance in their practice of standing at the counter to drink their coffee. Take away exists but is rare, and a coffee at the table can cost twice as much as standing at the bar. Standing at the bar allows one to consume their coffee in a timely matter without the need of a takeaway cup. The size of Italian coffee, another large difference from American coffee, does not need a cup for the road simply because it takes only a minute or two to drink it.

In Italy, coffee becomes a break in the day rather than a culture that requires a take away cup or large amounts to keep people awake at work or school.

The bar becomes a place to eat una brioche e un caffe, and experience the true companionship between Italians that takes time to see between Americans. At first glance from the lens of an American student, the way in which Italians take coffee seems strange, particular, and hard to grasp, but after observation and time, it is clear that the importance of coffee in Italy shows the culture that exists between Italians. It gives a time in the day to talk with the other people at the bar, break away from work or school. In Italy, coffee becomes more than a drink, rather it becomes the culture.

Seeing the world through the eyes of an orangutan

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A captive bred Sumatran orangutan and a University of Nottingham neuroscientist in Malaysia are hoping to explain some of the mysteries of the visual brain and improve the lives of captive bred animals.

She is a captive bred Sumatran orangutan. He is a neuroscientist specialising in cognitive and sensory systems research. With the help of specially adapted eye tracking equipment they are hoping to explain some of the mysteries of the visual brain and improve the lives of captive bred animals.

Dr Neil Mennie, from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), has received funding from Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI) to study the eye movements of Tsunami -- a seven year old orangutan at The National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara). Not only will Dr Mennie's research address vital questions about the visual cognition of humans and apes in natural tasks, it will also provide valuable enrichment for the juvenile captive-born orangutan.

Dr Mennie said: "Orangutans are particularly interesting because to survive in the treetops they must be very spatially aware of their surroundings. I hope to investigate their ability to search for food and to compare their progress with humans in 3D search and foraging tasks."

Dr Mennie, who is from the Cognitive and Sensory Systems Research Group in the School of Psychology at UNMC, is interested in how humans and apes use their brains to learn and make predictions about our surroundings. With the help of Tsunami's keeper, Mohd Sharullizam Ramli, and the special eye tracking equipment that is worn over her head and shoulders, Dr Mennie has spent the last year recording Tsunami's eye and body movements during the performance of complex actions such as locomotion, foraging for food and manipulation of small objects.

Tracking the eyes of an Orangutan

Tsunami was slowly introduced to the idea of wearing the eye tracking equipment that consists of a back pack containing a wireless transmitter. This pack back transmits data from two video cameras mounted on her head-band. As Tsunami performs various natural tasks -- foraging for food, using tools, moving around -- one camera films what she sees and the other camera films the movements of her right eye. Afterwards Dr Mennie and his students sit down and look at each video frame from this camera and write down the timing and location of these eye movements over the environment. As we make 3 eye movements per second, this is a very time consuming procedure.

Dr Mennie said: "I'm interested in the way we make predictive eye movements to places in the world where the stimulus is yet to appear and whether these predictive eye movements are there to assist the timing and placement of actions or whether they also help high-level mechanisms such as memory for our immediate space and the location of objects within it."

As part of his research Dr Mennie is also hoping to shed light on how these endangered animals navigate to help other scientists who seek to conserve the orangutan habitat. Knowledge of their foraging and search behaviour may help in the design and conservation of forest corridors.

Improving the life of captive animals

Orangutans are a critically endangered species -- they are also among the most intelligent primates. The Sumatran orangutan is on the IUCN Critically Endangered list. At Zoo Negara they are hoping Dr Mennie's research will help them develop their Enrichment Programme that is designed to get captive animals behaving as they would in the wild.

In the wild Tsunami would use her vision and her hands to guide her through the environment -- to find food, to use tools, to move and climb. To make Dr Mennie's task even harder, orangutans can grasp equally well with their feet. Faradilla Ain Roselan, Zoology Officer at Zoo Negara Enrichment Centre, said: "We want to keep our animals occupied so they don't display stereo typical behaviour such as pacing. We also want them to be able to exhibit any natural behaviour. Apes are highly intelligent animals and we don't want them to get bored. If we predict what they want to do maybe we can think of an enrichment that would suit their intelligence."

Long term goals

Currently Tsunami is in a specially built enclosure and this is proving to be a very useful beginning. Eventually he hopes to track this young orangutan when she is allowed to join her fellow red apes and Dr Mennie's long term goal is to record animals in the wild.

Dr Mennie said: "I could have done this research at any zoo. But the orangutan is a flagship symbol of Malaysia and I think it is fitting that this research is done here in Malaysia at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus."

With funding from the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Dr Mennie has already studied Orangutan eye movements in free ranging behaviour. MOHE has also funded a project that looked at the predictive eye movements of humans when they play the Malaysian game Congkak.

INFLUENCE GAME: Tax them, not us, groups say

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A big coalition of business groups says there must be give-and-take in the negotiations to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of massive tax increases and spending cuts. But raising tax rates ? a White House priority ? is out of the question, the group adds.

The homebuilding industry says it won't tolerate even a nick in the mortgage interest deduction. It doesn't matter, industry leaders say, if it's part of a broad, spread-the-pain package designed to tame the soaring debt.

And there's no ambiguity in the views of the top lobbying arm for retirees.

"AARP to Washington: No cuts to Medicare and Social Security in last-minute budget deal" the group's Web site declares. AARP nixes the notion of slowing the cost-of-living formula for Social Security recipients, even if it's part of a big, bipartisan compromise package. And President Barack Obama should drop his idea of raising Medicare's eligibility age, AARP adds.

So much for the notion of shared sacrifice as Congress and the White House face a Dec. 31 deadline to craft a far-reaching deficit-reduction plan. If they fail, the government tips over the so-called fiscal cliff, at least for a time. Nearly everyone's taxes will rise, and federal programs will be whacked. Financial markets might quake, and a new recession could begin, economists say.

In Washington, meanwhile, it's virtually every group for itself, scrambling to protect 100 percent of each tax break and government payout it now enjoys.

America is split down the middle politically, as the last half dozen presidential races have shown. Aside from a few think tanks and civic-minded groups, there's almost no talk of splitting the pain among interest groups, populations and professions in a manner that seems inevitable if lawmakers are to achieve the trillions of dollars in deficit-reduction both parties call for.

The old adage, "Don't tax thee, don't tax me, tax the man behind the tree" was never more in vogue.

Of course, some of the tough talk may be posturing. No one wants to show a willingness to compromise at the start of a long, tough negotiating season.

Still, the adamant positions that major interest groups are taking ? and their insistence that sacrifices hit others, not them ? underscore the difficulty Obama and congressional leaders face. The tougher a group talks to its members and the public, the harder it is to back down later when a bit of shared pain for everyone emerges as the only path to a deal.

The line-in-the-sand talk begins, of course, with top politicians themselves.

"Raising tax rates is unacceptable," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said shortly after Obama won re-election. He seemed unfazed by Obama's campaign promise to let the Bush-era tax cuts expire for couples making over $250,000 a year.

Washington insiders think both men might bend, as they did last year when they nearly struck a "grand bargain" combining major spending cuts with tax increases. Boehner's conservative colleagues rebelled before the package took final shape.

Boehner's House caucus seems slightly less restive now. But outside groups are gearing up to fight virtually every idea being floated to reduce spending or raise revenues. To reach a deficit-cutting package big enough to replace the fiscal cliff, lawmakers will have to stare down these groups, which pour millions of dollars into political campaigns and flood congressional offices with constituents' phone calls.

Interest groups, like many politicians, talk warmly of compromise in the abstract. But they dig in when the talk turns to specific ideas that run counter to their philosophies or profitability.

"There has to be give" in the negotiations, said Jade West, who heads the decade-old Tax Relief Coalition, comprised of major business groups. But on the question of raising tax rates on the rich ? probably the most-discussed issue on the fiscal cliff table ? West said her group is adamantly opposed.

"I don't care what he said," she said of Obama's campaigning on the topic. "The sound bite, 'tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich'" ignores the harm such a policy would do, she said.

"Taxing the people who hire is just nuts," West said.

AARP is equally firm in opposing changes to Social Security and Medicare, the mammoth "entitlement" programs that economists say must be reined in soon to avoid disastrously large deficits in future years.

Seventeen months ago, AARP showed more flexibility. Its policy chief said the group would consider modest cuts in Social Security for future retirees, noting that such changes seem all but inevitable at some point. AARP members complained, the official left, and the organization resumed the stance it holds today: no reductions in Social Security or Medicare benefits.

Itemized tax deductions are another area where Democrats and Republicans are looking for possible ways to generate more government revenue. Here, too, powerful lobbying groups are rallying to oppose any changes that would cost their members money.

The home mortgage interest deduction saves borrowers $99 billion a year in taxes, making it easier to buy and sell houses. Should even a small portion of that tax break be eliminated, perhaps for the richest people, to help reduce federal borrowing?

No, says Jerry Howard, chief executive of the National Association of Home Builders. Home owners suffered huge losses in personal wealth during the recent collapse of the housing market and the sector should be spared any further dings, he said.

"While the rest of the nation was in a recession, we were in a depression," he said. "Congress should be embarrassed" to even think of asking homeowners to help pay for a fiscal crisis that lawmakers brought on themselves through years of inaction, he added.

It's the same tune at universities and other institutions that rely on charitable gifts. They want to fully exempt the charitable gift deduction, which costs the government about $51 billion a year, from a role in the fiscal cliff talks.

"We urge you and House leaders not to impose any limits or caps to the charitable deduction," the Charitable Giving Coalition said in a recent letter to Boehner and others.

Like other interest groups, this one says it has special attributes that set it apart.

"The charitable deduction is different than other itemized deductions in that it encourages individuals to give away a portion of their income to those in need," the letter said.

And so it goes, group by group, tax break by tax break, payout by payout. Everyone is special. Everyone is deserving.

Alzheimer's disease in mice alleviated: Promising therapeutic approach for humans

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? Pathological changes typical of Alzheimer's disease were significantly reduced in mice by blockade of an immune system transmitter. A research team from Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin and the University of Zurich has just published a new therapeutic approach in fighting Alzheimer's disease in the current issue of Nature Medicine. This approach promises potential in prevention, as well as in cases where the disease has already set in.

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common causes of dementia. In Germany and Switzerland alone, around 1.5 million people are affected, and forecasts predict a doubling of the number of patients worldwide within the next 20 years. The accumulation of particular abnormal proteins, including amyloid-? (A?) among others, in patients' brains plays a central role in this disease. Prof. Frank Heppner from the Department of Neuropathology at Charit? and his colleague Prof. Burkhard Becher from the Institute for Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich were able to show that turning off particular cytokines (immune system signal transmitters) reduced the Alzheimer's typical amyloid-? deposits in mice with the disease. As a result, the strongest effects were demonstrated after reducing amyloid-? by approximately 65 percent, when the immune molecule p40 was affected, which is a component of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-12 and -23.

Relevant for human therapy

Follow-up experiments also relevant for humans showed that substantial improvements in behavioral testing resulted when mice were given the antibody blocking the immune molecule p40. This effect was also achieved when the mice were already showing symptoms of the disease. Based on the current study by Prof. Heppner's and Prof. Becher's team, the level of p40 molecules is higher in Alzheimer's patients' brain fluid, which is in agreement with a recently published study by American colleagues demonstrating increased p40 levels in blood plasma of subjects with Alzheimer's disease, thus showing obvious relevance for human therapy.

The significance of the immune system in Alzheimer's research is the focus of current efforts. Prof. Heppner and Prof. Becher suspect that cytokines IL-12 and IL-23 themselves are not causative in the pathology, and that the mechanism of the immune molecule p40 in Alzheimer's requires additional clarification. However, they are convinced that the results of their six-years of research work justify the step toward clinical studies in humans, for which they plan to collaborate with a suitable industrial partner.

IIn the context of other illnesses, such as psoriasis, a medication that suppresses p40 in humans has already been applied. "Based on the safety data in patients," comment Profs. Heppner and Becher, "clinical studies could now be implemented without delay. Now, the goal is to bring the new therapeutic approach to Alzheimer patients quickly."

Egypt's Mursi to meet judges over power grab

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi meets senior judges on Monday to try to ease a crisis over his seizure of new powers which has set off violent protests reminiscent of the revolution last year that led to the rise of his Islamist movement.

The justice minister said he believed Mursi would agree with the country's highest judicial authority on its proposal to limit the scope of the new powers.

But the protesters, some camped in Cairo's Tahrir Square, have said only retracting his decree will satisfy them, a sign of the deep rift between Islamists and their opponents that is destabilizing Egypt two years after Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

"There is no use amending the decree," said Tarek Ahmed, 26, a protester who stayed the night in Tahrir, where tents covered the central traffic circle. "It must be scrapped."

One person has been killed and about 370 have been injured in clashes between police and protesters since Mursi issued the decree on Thursday shielding his decisions from judicial review, emboldened by international plaudits for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas.

The stock market is down more than 7 percent.

Mursi's political opponents have accused him of behaving like a new dictator and the West has voiced its concern, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel and lies at the heart of the Arab Spring.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Mursi's office said he would meet Egypt's highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial Council, on Monday, and the council hinted at compromise.

Mursi's decree should apply only to "sovereign matters", it said, suggesting it did not reject the declaration outright, and called on judges and prosecutors, some of whom began a strike on Sunday, to return to work.

Justice Minister Ahmed Mekky, speaking about the council statement, said: "I believe President Mohamed Mursi wants that."

LIBERALS ANGRY

The protesters are worried that Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood aims to dominate the post-Mubarak era after winning the first democratic parliamentary and presidential elections this year.

A deal with a judiciary dominated by Mubarak-era judges, which Mursi has pledged to reform, may not placate them.

Banners in Tahrir called for dissolving the assembly drawing up a constitution, an Islamist-dominated body Mursi made immune from legal challenge. Many liberals and others have walked out of the assembly saying their voices were not being heard.

Only once a constitution is written can a new parliamentary election be held. Until then, legislative and executive power remains in Mursi's hands, and Thursday's decree puts his decisions above judicial oversight.

One Muslim Brotherhood member was killed and 60 people were hurt on Sunday in an attack on the main office of the Brotherhood in the Egyptian Nile Delta town of Damanhour, the website of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said.

The party's offices have also been attacked in other cities.

A security source had earlier put the number of wounded at more than 500, but later clarified that this was the number injured since street battles erupted last week with police in and around Tahrir before the decree was announced.

One politician said the scale of the crisis could push opponents towards a deal to avoid a further escalation. Mursi's opponents have called for a big demonstration on Tuesday.

"I am very cautiously optimistic because the consequences are quite, quite serious, the most serious they have been since the revolution," said Mona Makram Ebeid, former member of parliament and prominent figure in Egyptian politics.

"This is the most critical and most dramatic moment since the revolution," she said. "He has succeeded in uniting the opposition camp who for the time being seem to be unison."

Mursi's office repeated assurances that the steps would be temporary, and said he wanted dialogue with political groups to find "common ground" over what should go into the constitution.

Talks with Mursi have been rejected by members of a National Salvation Front, a new opposition coalition that brings together liberal, leftist and other politicians and parties, who until Mursi's decree had been a fractious bunch struggling to unite.

MILITARY STAYING OUT

"There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says 'let us split the difference'," prominent opposition leader and Mohamed ElBaradei said on Saturday. He has said he expected to act as the Front's coordinator.

The military has stayed out of the crisis after leading Egypt through a messy 16-month transition to a presidential election in June. Analysts say Mursi neutralized the army when he sacked top generals in August, appointing a new generation who now owe their advancement to the Islamist president.

Though the military still wields influence through business interests and a security role, it is out of frontline politics.

Images of protesters clashing with police and tear gas wafting through Tahrir Square have been unsettling reminder of the uprising that toppled Mubarak in February 2011 and violence that flared under army rule, scaring investors and tourists.

Egypt had hoped to stop the economic rot by signing an initial deal last week for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund. As well as tumbling share prices, yields at a Sunday treasury bill auction rose, putting even more pressure on the government that faces a crushing budget deficit.

"We are back to square one, politically, socially," said Mohamed Radwan of Pharos Securities, an Egyptian brokerage firm.

Issued just a day after Mursi received glowing tributes from Washington for his work brokering a deal to end eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas, the decree drew warnings from the West to uphold democracy. Washington has leverage because of billions of dollars it sends in annual military aid.

The decree protects the assembly writing the constitution from dissolution before completing its work, and it now has a deadline of February. The constitutional court, which has declared the Islamist-dominated lower house of parliament void, was expected to rule on the validity of the assembly on December 2.

Many of Mursi's political opponents share the view that Egypt's judiciary needs reform, though they disagree with his methods. Mursi's new powers allowed him to sack the prosecutor general who took his job during the Mubarak era and is unpopular among reformists of all stripes.

Trip home smooth for many Thanksgiving travelers

SEATTLE (AP) ? Despite a predicted increase in the number of holiday travelers, Americans returning home after the long Thanksgiving weekend found generally good weather, few airport delays and at times manageable conditions on the nation's highways.

Travel appeared to run smoothly Sunday ? typically the busiest travel day of the year ? as millions journeyed home after feasting with family and friends, even though there was little elbow room on packed buses, trains and airplanes.

Many travelers strategically hit the road early in the day or waited until much later to avoid possible bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Craig Haft, 57, left Cincinnati with his wife and daughter around 6:15 a.m. to drive to their home in Fairfax, Va., after visiting family. At midday, he reported smooth driving.

"It went fine on Wednesday and has been good so far today," he said.

Some were upbeat despite long journeys ahead. Andy Harbison, 38, said he didn't mind the 8-hour drive back to Harrisburg, Pa. after visiting family in Michigan.

The roads were good, he said, and he simply enjoyed being with family after being away from them during previous deployments to Iraq and Kuwait while in the National Guard.

Experts had predicted a slight rise in the number of people traveling this Thanksgiving weekend compared to last year. Some 43.6 million Americans were expected to journey 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, and more of them were likely to be driving while fewer were flying, according to AAA's yearly analysis.

Mauro Scappa and his wife, Chris, and their two children were among those who chose not to take to the skies. They braced themselves for delays as they waited at New York's Penn Station for a train back to Washington, near their home in Falls Church, Va. But their train was expected on time Sunday morning.

"We definitely wanted to avoid the airport on Thanksgiving weekend, for sure," Scappa said.

Renee Kerns, her husband Mike and their two children left about 30 minutes earlier than usual to catch a flight to home to California. They anticipated longer lines at the Washington-area Dulles International Airport, but sailed through security in about 10 minutes and were at their gate for their 8:30 a.m. flight to Oakland, Calif., more than an hour before their flight.

"It was fine," Renee Kerns said of getting through security. Added her husband: "Easy, but we're early."

Helped by dry weather and mostly clear skies, both O'Hare and Midway international airports in Chicago reported normal operations Sunday with no delays.

Leonard Reddick, 29, waited near downtown Chicago for a bus back to Flint, Mich. He traveled on Thanksgiving day to see his sister in the Chicago area, explaining that it's his trick for avoiding the huge crowds on the day before the holiday. He also liked the $84 roundtrip fare.

Reddick, who works at General Motors, was rethinking one decision as he was gearing up for the five-hour trip back home to Michigan: He had declined the turkey and mac and cheese leftovers because he thought it might mess up his luggage.

The tens of millions of holiday travelers also included a few thousand users of Megabus, the ultra-cheap inter-city network popular among students and the creative class. Shane Dillon, 26, a librarian now living and seeking work in Chicago, joined the throng waiting to board at Detroit's Rosa Parks Transit Center for the return trip to the Windy City. He was in the area visiting relatives in Allen Park, Mich.

"It was great to see family and friends. The food was good," Dillon said. A few days, though, was enough. "I'm glad to be going home."

Dense fog greeted travelers at Union Station in Los Angeles early Sunday, but it didn't appear to cause problems.

Mike Lansing, 63, and his wife Kay, 60, opted to take Amtrak for the first time to their home in the San Francisco Bay area after weighing high gas prices. They spent a week in LA with their daughter, son-in-law and new grandson.

He said he's relieved not to have to get behind the wheel. "I don't know if we're really saving any money, but it's an adventure!" said Kay Lansing.

At the Boise Airport, Charles Beyer, 59, waited for luggage after having just arrived from Portland, Ore., where he visited his son and daughter. He said he found most of his fellow passengers complacent about the challenges of traveling during the holiday weekend through packed airports.

"The good old days of pulling up to the curb and getting onto the airplane in five minutes are long gone," he said.

South Africa: Police kill 7 suspected robbers

(AP) ? Police in South Africa say they shot dead seven suspected robbers and wounded nine others in a botched theft at an armored car company.

Capt. Paul Ramaloko of the South African Police Service said Sunday that officers got a tip that the thieves wanted to rob a Protea Coin depot in Robertville, a suburb west of Johannesburg.

A gunfight began Saturday night as officers tried to arrest the suspects. Ramaloko says no officers were injured in the shooting. He said they recovered firearms from the suspected robbers at the depot.

Violent crime remains common in South Africa, as unemployment remains high and options few for the nation's poor. Mass police shootings often occur as officers confront heavily armed criminal gangs.

PFT: Seahawks seething over roughing call

St Louis Rams v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

It sounds like rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley will get another shot? to start for the Cardinals, after his four-interception debut.

But as with all things Cardinals quarterbacks this year, that comes with an asterisk.

Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that Lindley would start again if Kevin Kolb wasn?t healthy, making it reasonable to wonder if John Skelton will ever see the light of day again.

Two of Lindley?s picks were returned for touchdowns in the Cards loss to the Rams, their seventh straight after a 4-0 start.

?Yes. We stay with Ryan,? Whisenhunt said of the non-Kolb condition, via Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. Listen, let?s start this thing off by saying you can?t have those interceptions. But in the first half, I thought he did a really nice job. He moved in the pocket, was decisive, managed it, made some good throws. We had three scoring drives in the first half, 17 points and over 200 yards of offense, possession time, was good on third down. I felt that we did a lot of good things, even with the pick-six.

?And the first pick-six, that was a mistake in his read. That can happen. The one in the second half, you have to learn from those. He made a bad decision. That?s what you have to see, can he learn from that? There was nobody more upset about than him, especially after the game. He was torn up because he knows he can?t do that.?

In Arizona he can, because they?re running out of options.

Asked if Kolb might be ready to return from a rib injury this week, Whisenhunt said he wasn?t sure yet.

?I don?t know where Kevin is health-wise,? Whisenhunt said. ?He?s making progress but as far as being ready for a game, that?s something we can?t determine until we see where he is Wednesday.?

Short of Kurt Warner coming back, it?s hard to imagine how any shuffling of the current deck chairs is going to matter that much.

Melt water on Mars could sustain life, new research suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? Near surface water has shaped the landscape of Mars. Areas of the planet's northern and southern hemispheres have alternately thawed and frozen in recent geologic history and comprise striking similarities to the landscape of Svalbard. This suggests that water has played a more extensive role than previously envisioned, and that environments capable of sustaining life could exist, according to new research from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Mars is a changing planet, and in recent geological time repeated freeze and thaw cycles has played a greater role than expected in terms of shaping the landscape. In an attempt to be able to make more reliable interpretations of the landscapes on Mars, researchers have developed new models for analysing images from the planet.

The process of analysing satellite images from Mars has been combined with similar studies of an arctic environment in Svalbard. Despite the fact that Svalbard is considerably warmer than Mars, the arctic landscape shows a number of striking similarities to certain parts of Mars.

One important common feature is the presence of permafrost and frozen subsurface water.

"In my thesis work, I have compared aerial images from Svalbard with the same resolution as satellite images from Mars, and combined with field-work we increase the ground resolution even further," explains Dr Andreas Johnsson from the University of Gothenburg's Department of Earth Sciences, who has worked together with planetary researchers from Germany.

Having studied hundreds of gullies on Mars and compared these with Svalbard, the researchers found evidence that the gullies on Mars were likely formed by melting snow and water erosion. Field work has supplemented the interpretation of aerial images.

"The ability to get a first-hand experience with landforms that have been studied using aerial images is a unique feeling. One important insight we have gained is that, despite the high image resolution for both Svalbard and Mars, the camera can't capture everything. What appears to be fine-grained sediment on an aerial image of Svalbard can actually turn out to be a very rocky area which has implications for certain types of landforms. It's important to bear this in mind when studying images of Mars."

Since Mars has a cyclical climate, the same conditions could recur in the future.

The existence of liquid water is a vital component if life on Mars is to be possible.

"Research on Earth has shown that organisms can survive in extreme cold environments with limited access to liquid water," continues Dr Johnsson. "Studying various areas on Mars therefore enables us to investigate whether there could be environments with conditions capable of supporting life."

Before heading out to play a show with Florida Georgia Line at the Exit/In, The Cadillac Black stopped by MusicRow headquarters yesterday (11/15) to warm up. The trio is made up of three Nashville natives Jaren Johnston, Neil Mason and Kelby Ray, who released their self-titled debut album earlier this year.

The Cadillac Black played a stripped down acoustic set including album tracks ?I?m Southern? and ?Turn It On.? They concluded by introducing their new single ?Get Your Buzz On.?

Johnston also co-wrote Keith Urban?s No. 1 hit ?You Gonna Fly,? which earned him a nomination for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year at the 2012 MusicRow Awards this summer.

The band?s next show is today (11/16) in Little Rock, AR. For more information about The Cadillac Black and their tour dates, visit thecadillacblack.com.

Bad air means bad news for seniors' brainpower

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? Living in areas of high air pollution can lead to decreased cognitive function in older adults, according to new research presented in San Diego at The Gerontological Society of America's (GSA) 65th Annual Scientific Meeting.

This finding is based on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Health and Retirement Study. The analysis was conducted by Jennifer Ailshire, PhD, a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Biodemography and Population Health and the Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California.

"As a result of age-related declines in health and functioning, older adults are particularly vulnerable to the hazards of exposure to unhealthy air," Ailshire said. "Air pollution has been linked to increased cardiovascular and respiratory problems, and even premature death, in older populations, and there is emerging evidence that exposure to particulate air pollution may have adverse effects on brain health and functioning as well."

This is the first study to show how exposure to air pollution influences cognitive function in a national sample of older men and women. It suggests that fine air particulate matter -- composed of particles that are 2.5 micrometers in diameter and smaller, thought to be sufficiently small that if inhaled they can deposit deep in the lung and possibly the brain -- may be an important environmental risk factor for reduced cognitive function.

The study sample included 14,793 white, black, and Hispanic men and women aged 50 and older who participated in the 2004 Health and Retirement Study (a nationally representative survey of older adults). Individual data were linked with data on 2004 annual average levels of fine air particulate matter from the Environmental Protection Agency's Air Quality System monitors across the country. Cognitive function was measured on a scale of 1 to 35 and consisted of tests assessing word recall, knowledge, language, and orientation.

Ailshire discovered that those living in areas with high levels of fine air particulate matter scored poorer on the cognitive function tests. The association even remained after accounting for several factors, including age, race/ethnicity, education, smoking behavior, and respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

Fine air particulate matter exposures ranged from 4.1 to 20.7 micrograms per cubic meter, and every ten point increase was associated with a 0.36 point drop in cognitive function score. In comparison, this effect was roughly equal to that of aging three years; among all study subjects, a one-year increase in age was associated with a drop 0.13 in cognitive function score.
