Analysis: Obama-Romney debate challenge: handling the off-script moment

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If history is a guide, Democrat Barack Obama will have a tough time in the first presidential debate on Wednesday, Republican Mitt Romney will be particularly aggressive, and both will risk committing a damaging gaffe if they wander off their talking points.

The 90-minute showdown in Denver - the first of three televised Obama-Romney encounters in October that will set the tone for the final month of the presidential campaign - will feature two experienced and competent debaters who are at their best in scripted settings.

Neither the Democratic president nor his Republican rival has ever seemed to enjoy the more freewheeling aspects of a candidates' debate, and both have said things during debates that became headaches for their campaigns.

Obama, known for soaring rhetoric and inspirational generalities in his speeches, suffered in some 2008 Democratic primary debates from a diffident and nuanced style that could make him seem flat and uncertain. His most pointed responses often seemed condescending or flippant.

Romney, who survived a grueling series of debates in this year's Republican race, often displayed an efficient and feisty style in rolling over his challengers.

But Romney also can seem stiff and awkward when challenged.

When frustrated, he can also make mistakes - like his offer to bet Texas Governor Rick Perry $10,000 over a disputed point during one Republican primary debate, a scene that was a reminder of critics' charges that Romney is an out-of-touch rich guy.

"They are pretty evenly matched as debaters," said Alan Schroeder of Northeastern University in Boston, who has written a history of presidential debates. "They both tend to be more intellectual than emotional, and they are both articulate and comfortable on camera. But they would both prefer to be in a more controlled setting."

The high-stakes debates - particularly the one on Wednesday, which will be moderated by PBS' Jim Lehrer and focus on domestic policy - could be the last chance for Romney to reclaim momentum from Obama.

The president leads his Republican rival in most national polls and in the politically divided "swing" states likely to decide the November 6 election.

Romney has taken frequent breaks from the campaign trail to practice for the debates, which could draw a television audience dwarfing the 30 million who watched his speech on the last night of the Republican National Convention last month.

The first of the three debates in the 2008 presidential race between Obama and Republican John McCain drew 52 million television viewers.

Debates rarely make a big difference in the final results of presidential races, but a strong performance can give a candidate a bump of a few percentage points in polls, said Mitchell McKinney, a political communications specialist at the University of Missouri.

"You don't normally see game-changer type moments in a presidential debate," he said. "But now the game is almost over, and this is Romney's chance. Can he take advantage?"

Both candidates are proven debaters, but have weaknesses that can be exploited, analysts said.

"If you are Romney, you want to figure out a way to get under Obama's skin, you want to see him get prickly," said Dan Schnur, an aide to McCain's 2000 presidential campaign. "If you're Obama, you want to be a little unpredictable and throw Romney off his script."

A CHALLENGE FOR OBAMA

Recent presidential debates suggest the first debate could be Obama's toughest.

Three of the last four incumbent presidents to seek a second four-year term - Ronald Reagan in 1984, George H.W. Bush in 1992 and his son George W. Bush in 2004 - suffered difficult first debates, although Reagan and the younger Bush won re-election.

The exception was Bill Clinton, a natural debater, in 1996. Clinton had defeated the elder Bush in 1992, and was a much sharper communicator than Kansas Senator Bob Dole, Clinton's Republican opponent in 1996.

"An incumbent president is used to having his way and being deferred to. He is not as used to being challenged," McKinney said. As a result, "they may come across as perturbed. Their job is to defend their record without becoming defensive."

That could prove tricky for Obama, who also will have to walk a fine line in acknowledging the nation's high unemployment rate and the economic difficulties faced by most Americans, while offering a more hopeful vision for the future.

During the 2008 debates, Obama sometimes sounded like the constitutional law professor he once was, exploring every angle of an issue in a rambling style. His staff says it is trying to curb those tendencies in debate preparations.

Obama was reminded of the danger of straying off message earlier this year when he punctuated a speech about the government help that business owners receive with the line, "You didn't build that."

Romney's Republicans called it an insult to business owners and made "We Did Build That" a theme not only of campaign commercials but the Republican convention.

Obama's most memorable 2008 debate gaffe came in what was widely viewed as an insensitive putdown of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton after a moderator questioned her likability.

"You're likable enough, Hillary," said Obama, who after his election appointed her as secretary of state.

Romney faces his own challenges on likability, and the trick for the former private equity executive will be to mount an aggressive attack on Obama without coming off as too cold, calculating or desperate.

"His problem is that people don't believe what he says," said Democrat Doug Hattaway, an aide in the presidential campaigns of Al Gore in 2000 and Hillary Clinton in 2008. "He delivers the lines fine, but the punches don't land the way they would if he was trusted more, so he comes off as more scripted."

During the primary debates, his offer of a $10,000 bet to Perry was not Romney's only out-of-touch moment.

During a debate in Nevada, he countered an attack on his use of a lawn service that employed illegal immigrants by saying that he had told the company, "I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals."

ROMNEY'S GAFFE PROBLEM

On the campaign trail, Romney has unintentionally reminded voters of his wealth and privilege with comments about his friendship with NASCAR owners and his wife Ann's Cadillacs.

In what could be a turning point in the campaign, Romney was secretly recorded at a private fundraiser telling wealthy donors that the "47 percent" of Americans who do not pay taxes are "victims" who depend on the government for handouts and probably would never vote for him.

"Romney has shown a greater facility for gaffes and missteps, obviously," McKinney said.

Even so, Romney - who participated in more than 20 debates in the 2012 primaries and more than 15 during his unsuccessful run for the White House in 2008 - will be the most experienced presidential campaign debater ever to appear in a general election debate, McKinney said.

Romney will have far more camera time and a much bigger audience in a one-on-one debate with Obama than he did during the crowded primary debates. Analysts said he would need to articulate a sharper vision for the nation and avoid looking like he is merely trying to score debate points at every turn.

Gore learned that lesson the hard way in 2000, when he seemed to win the verbal jousting with George W. Bush but turned off viewers with his impatient demeanor and exasperated sighs when Bush was talking.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling the U.N. General Assembly that he wants to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy but that the time to do that is not unlimited.

Obama says Iran has failed time after time to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful and has failed to meet its obligations to the United Nations. He also says the Iranian government has been propping up the dictatorship in Syria and supporting terrorist groups abroad.

The president says, quote, "the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

This is Obama's final international address before the November elections.

UK Franchise Directory News? Blog Archive ? Franchise owner ...

Written by Francisco and Kelvin, Match Options franchisees in Crawley and Sussex

As days goes on, we are convinced that we took the right decision to buy the Franchise opportunity offered by Match Options. After several searches, we chose Match options and we made a decision to give it a trial.

Initial Meeting/discovery meeting
We were impressed by the presentation which supported what is stated on the company?s website and Business opportunity prospectus. Our previous experience was that many other franchisors give a presentation that differed from what they had advertised. We were lucky that we had some experience in recruitment and it was therefore easy for us to make a quick opinion and decision on what was on offer. We immediately hit off with the Franchise team after this presentation and we signed off for the initial training!

Initial Training
We underwent the initial intensive training and to our satisfaction, we are confident that the Trainers are very professional, realistic, knowledgeable, skilled and experienced in this highly regulated social and healthcare industry. All answers to our questions were properly addressed.

We would encourage those taking this franchise opportunity to attend this initial training because it is not only motivating but also made us believe in ourselves that we had entered into? a supportive partnership. We are free to speak to employees in the company?s many branches, and when we do so, we always feel welcome and as members of a big family.

We believe the company has one of the best IT system with an online data management system that makes it so easy to handle all areas of daily operations dealing with workers and clients. The system also enables the delivery of support and response from the franchising team so easy to our satisfaction.

Set up
From the setup of our office to the commencement of trading, the franchising team has been extremely helpful and patient, also being receptive to our various ideas and suggestions. They respect our independence as investors.

The team also gave us invaluable advice and guidance in the search for appropriate premises for our office .From their experience gained when opening their many branches, they ensured that we got the right leasing terms, telephone systems and even postage arrangements.

We are still receiving on site visits and training in our office and learning some tricks of trade one can never gain without support from those who started their business the same way we have like Match options. They are a good mentor to our success and it is very clear that if we succeed, then Match Options also succeeds.

Future
We are impressed that we took a territory where the company has clients and workers and we have started trading from day one. We are now ready for the challenge to improve on the business opportunity in Sussex.

We are now experiencing the income streams as was promised when we committed? ourselves-Training of staff, CRB checks and general recruitment placements.? We have no doubt that the support structure within Match Options is a great opportunity to quickly build a successful and profitable business.

U.S. bans beef from Canada's XL Foods plant

(Reuters) - The United States has halted imports of beef products from one of Canada's largest beef-processing plants, owned by privately held XL Foods at Brooks, Alberta, due to findings of E. coli bacteria.

A spokesman for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said on Tuesday that the agency "de-listed" the plant on September 13 at the request of U.S. authorities, meaning that it cannot export any of its products to the United States until corrections are made.

"Which is normal, when there are positive findings from a facility," said CFIA spokesman Tim O'Connor.

XL Foods voluntarily recalled more than 250 meat products this month after positive findings of E. coli, a bacteria that can cause potentially life-threatening illness.

Canada is the sixth-largest beef and veal exporter in the world.

The CFIA has completed its review of the plant's food safety controls and found XL Foods could not demonstrate that it regularly updated its plan to control E. Coli in the facility, the agency said.

An official with XL Foods referred a request for comment to a company spokesman, who could not be reached.

Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, under questioning from opposition legislators in Ottawa, said the CFIA took swift action to control the movement of potentially contaminated products.

"None of the product made it to store shelves," he said. "No illnesses have been linked back to this particular strain of E. Coli, so we've actually done a tremendous job."

Ritz's spokeswoman, Meagan Murdoch, said the minister was referring only to the first batch of recalled products not making it to store shelves and that any other product that could have been contaminated has since been recalled.

Yakima County assessments mirror flat real estate market

By David Lester
Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. ? Property value assessment cards mailed to Yakima County?s 102,000 property owners late last week generally reflect a flat real estate market for 2011, according to county Assessor Dave Cook.

Property owners who saw their year-over-year values stay the same or decline shouldn?t expect a drop in their property taxes, however, especially if they live in a city or town.

Cook said the new taxable values are for Jan. 1 of this year and do not take into account a gradual increase in home sale activity and average prices that have occurred since then.

"What is encouraging is we are seeing an appreciation of value," the longtime assessor said. "Maybe we have reached a tipping point and values will start going up again."

Sales data gathered by Headwaters-The Source of Selah show for the first eight months of this year the number of home sales increased by 161 over the same period a year ago ? an increase of 14.5 percent, to a total of 1,267. The average selling price increased by $9,500, or about 6 percent, to $169,256.

For all of 2011, the number of residential sales fell and the average sales price was $160,250, a 2.6 percent drop from 2010.

Doug Rich, broker and owner of Prestige Realty of Yakima and a board member of the Multiple Listing Service, described the housing market as a mixed bag with sales increasing in some months and declining in others.

"If I was going to characterize the market, it is real flat but showing some signs of improvement," he said.

One trend the MLS is seeing is an increase in the number of sales that require third-party approval or are a short sale, meaning the seller is offering the property for less than is owed on the loan used to purchase the property.

"It might be Yakima?s time to work those things through the process the rest of the country was seeing six quarters ago," Rich added.

Cook said the total taxable value of land in the county on which property taxes will be collected next year increased slightly more than 1 percent for 2012. Total taxable values are $13.5 billion, compared to $13.3 billion last year. The $167 million increase in taxable values includes $133 million in new construction that came on the tax rolls for this year.

The amount of new construction last year, although higher than 2010, continues to lag behind prior years. New construction in 2007 exceeded $300 million.

Cook said the one area where values increased was in farmland.

"We don?t know if it is consolidation as farmers buy land to expand their operations," he said.

What impact the assessed values have on property taxes collected next year won?t be known until taxing districts submit their operating budgets to Cook by November. It is then that Cook will calculate property tax rates that must be charged to collect those revenues for cities, the county, fire districts and other taxing districts.

A property tax increase is likely for those who live in cities because Yakima County commissioners will shift at least $2.8 million from the county road levy to the county general fund levy next year to pay debt costs on jail construction and remodeling.

City residents pay only the general fund levy, which this year amounted to $1.53 per $1,000 of assessed value. By collecting more money for the general fund levy from a relatively flat value base, property taxes will increase.

County residents will benefit from the shift because the road levy will decline, which will more than offset the increase in the general fund levy.

Writing for the World SF Blog, by fiction editor Sarah Newton ? The ...

Back in March this year I had the great opportunity to take over from Debbie Moorhouse as fiction editor here at the World SF Blog. In the previous months, Debbie had blazed a trail, publishing short fiction works by authors from all over the globe, and naturally I jumped at the chance to help build this increasingly diverse and stimulating resource for speculative fiction fans everywhere.

The past six months have been filled with inspiring submissions exploring the nature of speculative fiction. In my university days I studied Russian and German literature, and have always loved classics from all around the world; but, like many English language readers, my exposure to non-English language speculative fiction?apart from the obvious canon titles?was always lacking. That?s a crazy situation in our increasingly global society, and one I knew needed remedying. That?s why it?s been a delight every week to read the subs to the World SF Blog, excited that my mind is going to be stretched and reshaped in new and unexpected ways.

For me, that?s what the World SF Blog is about. As writers and readers, we love to be exposed to the wildest flights of fancy about what our world is and could be. Here at the blog, anyone writing in English, regardless of whether it?s their first language and whatever their culture of origin, participates in a polyphony. We publish works by writers of all countries, making the site a constant dialectic, discussing and redefining speculative fiction, exposing, explaining, and working magic with cultural backgrounds, archetypes, perspectives.

That?s an editorial challenge. In a former life I was a translator and interpreter of Russian and Japanese, and I?ve a passion for languages. I?m no stranger to the issues of writing in a language that?s not your first language, or of translating your own language into another. When I edit a native English speaker, I view their writing from the perspective of a native speaker. With a non-English speaker, I find their writing sings with cadences, idioms, and structures of another culture, which it would be a crime to try and shoehorn into a rigorous, native English form. Over the past six months I?ve worked with writers to polish pieces, gently nudge turns of phrase, spellings, and word choices, so that they don?t appear jarring or obscure to the reader?s ear, while at the same time preserving the music and internal harmony of the writer?s own language and culture. Lyricism is an integral part of speculative fiction, and it?s essential to help it express itself fully.

Like the past, the future is a foreign country. But its foreignness is the stuff of our dreams and hopes, and sometimes our nightmares and fears. Whether speculative fiction talks about utopias or dystopias, personal experience or cosmic ideas, it offers suggestions for what our world could or should be. Its role as a forum for debating our future is amazingly powerful. Where are we heading? What kind of world do we want to live in? What decisions should our society be making to secure tomorrow?

In my novel Mindjammer I write about a ?Mindscape??a vast, interstellar repository of human memories and knowledge, to which every person is connected. That?s not just a metaphor: the Mindscape is out there, now, and we all access it every day. Over the past two decades it has mutated from an artefact of top-down cultural patronage into a decentralized, anarchic mass mind. The conscience of the human race is now online, and we as its readers and writers are helping to define it. We can allow cacophony and conflict to proliferate, or synthesis, debate, and exchange.

Blogs like the World SF Blog are the arenas for our many voices, visions, and questions. That?s why I hope you?ll continue to send us your flights of fancy and hard-written dreams. And let us know what you think of the stories, too?I?d love to see readers and writers increasingly use the World SF Blog to discuss the engaging ideas expressed here.

So?what sort of submissions are we looking for? Well, I think it?s important to stress that the ?SF? in ?World SF? refers to speculative fiction of all kinds, and not just science-fiction. In the past six months I?ve seen tales of psychological horror, magical realism, lyrical post-apocalyptic myth, zombies, werewolves, space colonies, archaeology, mystery, and metaphysics cross my desk?all of which are perfect. I haven?t seen much fiction set in more traditional fantasy environments; but, whatever you submit, the ?speculative? should be uppermost?tales of the weird, the fantastic, of ?what if? and wonder.

Readers?let us know what you like, what you?d like to see more of, or just ideas you have for the blog. Writers?if you?re out there with a beautiful idea or a story to tell, then send it through. It doesn?t matter which country you?re from?we publish works from the ?main? English-speaking countries just as much as we do from those for whom English isn?t a first language. Email us, then sit back and wait a few months for us to reply. We?re blessed with a great number of high quality submissions, and it can take us time to get back to you, but rest assured we?re passionate about speculative fiction, and will give your stories every attention they deserve.

Thanks for making my first six months so stimulating and inspiring. Long may it continue!

Live Cricket Score : England vs India - T20 World Cup 2012

Daijiworld Media Network

Colombo, Sep 23 : Hello, and a warm welcome to one and all for the second match of the day. Ind are up against Eng at Colombo. Both teams have already qualified to the next round, but will look to go there on a winning note. Toss in a few moments.

England have won the toss and elected to field

Dhoni: 'We have made four changes. Sehwag, Zaheer, Manoj and Ashwin are not playing today. We will need to execute our plans, every match from now onwards are going to be tough games. The match against Afghanistan was a one off, we are looking forward to this match. We believe that we have a good chance of winning the tournament.'

Broad: 'We will bowl. The pitches seem to have changed a bit here, this one looks a bit dry, we will hope to restrict India. Just one change, Bresnan is in for Samit. India are a top team, we will look to beat them.'

India (Playing XI): Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Ashok Dinda

England (Playing XI): Craig Kieswetter(w), Alex Hales, Luke Wright, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Jonathan Bairstow, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad(c), Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach

Match preview :

With both sides through to the Super Eights, one might not be totally wrong in expecting a subdued battle. That might not be the case though, as the rivalry between these two sides in the recent past could just subconsciously force England and India to put on a fierce battle.

England are likely to start off as favourites in this contest, owing to the form they displayed in their emphatic win against Afghanistan. India on the other hand looked a little nervous in their opening game and it would be fair to say that they allowed Afghanistan to put on quite a show, before finally sealing those two points.

Team News

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side were all over the place in the field, in their game against the Afghans. The fielding was quite poor and the bowling was pretty lacklustre. Zaheer Khan doesn't appear to be the perfect bowler for the shortest format, however, there isn't much on the bench to fall back on. Death over bowling still is a problem for this side and at some point in time during this tournament, that might just cost India a game.

Luckily for the 'Men in Blue', the batting more often than not seems to come to the rescue. Virat Kohli is one man who has been piling on the runs on a consistent basis and has managed to keep the innings together. Yuvraj Singh has looked good in short bursts, however, with the performance that Rohit Sharma put in during the Warm Up match against Pakistan, it might be a wise idea to send the latter in at number four.

England: Stuart Broad's side looked absolutely on top of their game in the previous encounter and were perfect in all departments. Luke Wright scored a brilliant 99 against the Afghans and the positive for this English side is the fact that he was supported well by the other middle order batsmen.

As a bowling unit England have always looked very strong. With the likes of Broad, Steven Finn, Tim Bresnan in the line up, the pace attack looks like a potent one and one that could certainly shake up a few batsmen. To add to that, England have variety in the form of Graeme Swann, who could be a handful on Sri Lankan wickets. England will probably go in with the same side as the one that played against Afghanistan.

Quotes:

Broad on Yuvraj Singh: 'Well, Yuvraj is a great player and we all welcome him having made such a strong comeback. Obviously, he is one of the most dangerous players but we will meet on the field tomorrow.'

Dhoni on Zaheer Khan: 'It's easier to go after a bowler when is not doing well. For me, Zaheer is the Sachin Tendulkar of the Indian bowling attack. He has been the leader of the bowling unit for a number of years now.'

3 Stand-Out Sushi Restaurants In Vancouver, Canada

sushi Vancouver, Canada is filled with restaurants serving Asian cuisine, especially sushi. With hundreds of these types of venues sprawled across the city, it can be difficult to choose where to go. If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary, try one of these stand-out sushi restaurants in Vancouver.

Let's Roll
104-1184 Denman Street

Located in Vancouver's West End, Let's Roll allows sushi-lovers to make their own rolls. The process takes five steps. First, choose whether you want traditional seaweed or modern soy as your wrap. Next, decide between white, green or mixed grain rice. Once this is done, you're on to the best part: stuffing your roll. You can choose two vegetables and two meats from a colorful showcase of items like salmon, tuna, avocado, prawn tempura, crab, beef, cucumber, spinach and more. Then, it's time to select two toppings from conventional choices like fake crab and tempura flakes or unusual items like potato chips. When you're finished, pick your sauces and you're good to go. Remember, this isn't traditional Japanese style, and the rolls you'll make are huge. That being said, all ingredients are fresh, it's fun and you'll get exactly what you want.

The Eatery
3431 West Broadway

The Eatery is unofficially Vancouver's funkiest sushi restaurant. Located in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver, it's been serving quirky Japanese fare since 1983. Signs reading "Funky Sushi" and an Astro Boy logo adorn the facade, while inside electronic music fills the air. The main attraction on the quirky cartoon-covered menu is the innovative rolls, although there are traditional-style options for those who want them. Some interesting fare includes the "Miss Piggy Roll," which has bacon, scallops, asparagus, roe and unagi sauce, the "Found Nemo" roll, with crab tempura, asparagus and avocado wrapped with seared salmon or the "Volcano" roll, which has salmon, tuna, scallops and avocado on a bed of spicy crab meat. Expect fun roll names like "Erotica Roll,""Italian Stallion" and the "S&S Roll," as this is one of the sexiest sushi venues in Vancouver. You can also go here for a fun night out, as it's more of an eclectic restaurant and bar then a quick sushi stop.

Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro
572 Davie Street

Although you'll find a plethora of sushi restaurants in Vancouver, most of them are quickly churning out rolls without thinking about quality or fresh ingredients. That's where Yaletown's Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro differs. I'm a big sushi fan, and I found this place by asking numerous chefs, managers and wait staff at local restaurants where I could get the best sushi in the city. It was almost unanimous that Juno was the best. This place employs serious Japanese chefs who are committed to making the highest quality sushi rolls possible. My main reason for recommending Juno is they're also sustainable. Ingredients include wild seafood, natural beef, free range chicken and heritage KUROBUTA pork, all locally-sourced from British Columbia farms. This is also a good place to try local libations, as Juno serves sakes from the Granville Island Artisan Sake Maker and BC "Vintners Quality Alliance" (VQA) wines.

New use for drones: Sports photography

(AP) ISLAMABAD - The use of drones in Pakistan normally brings to mind images of U.S. spy planes attacking tribal areas. But drones now are being used to capture a different kind of picture in the country ? showing some of the world's highest mountains being scaled by world-class climbers through some of Earth's thinnest air.

Drones, or remote-controlled aircraft, have long been the domain of the American military and are used extensively in Pakistan's tribal areas near the Afghanistan border to spy on and target militants. Recently, however, civilians have increasingly turned to drones to shoot ground-breaking footage of adventure sports.

This summer a Swiss expedition used remote-controlled helicopters to shoot rare footage of climbers on the Karakoram, one of the world's most demanding and formidable mountain ranges.

"People are going to see footage from the Karakoram that no human being has ever seen," said Corey Rich, a photographer and videographer from Lake Tahoe, California, who was on the expedition.

The expedition was a joint project between outdoor clothing and equipment company Mammut, and Dedicam, a firm that specializes in using remote-controlled helicopters to shoot video. Their goal: to document world-class mountaineer David Lama and his climbing partner Peter Ortner as they climbed Trango Tower. The sheer granite tower in the Baltoro Glacier is 19,685 feet above sea level and is one of the most technically difficult climbs in the world.

(Credit: AP/footloosefotography.com for Mammut, Andrew Peacock) Filmmakers long have used helicopters to capture aerial footage of climbers ? as well as other extreme sport athletes like surfers and skiers -that is hard to capture from the ground. But helicopters are costly and can be dangerous if they crash or get too close to the people on the ground. Additionally, their beating rotors often kick up dust, snow and wind ? and can push climbers off balance.

Drones, which can weigh just a few pounds and cost between $1,000 and $40,000, are a fraction of the size and cost of the helicopters traditionally used in adventure photography. Newer models tend to have all of their rotors facing into the sky, making them look a bit like a mechanical flying spider or insect.

The main concern for the summertime expedition was how ? and if ? the drone would perform in Pakistan's rugged conditions and high altitude.

"The main challenge was that the air is much thinner, and we didn't know how the flight controls would work with this and the propellers and motors," said drone operator Remo Masina, from Lucerne, Switzerland. He brought two on the Pakistan expedition ? one with four propellers and another with six. From the ground, he flew them with a handheld console that resembles a video game console, and wore goggles to let him see the camera's view.

Another challenge was to find the climbers on the mountain. Tracing the planned trek route, Masina directed the drone up the mountain until he spotted them ? more than a mile away.

The result was stunning images of the Karakoram and the climbers making it to the top.

Experienced climbers say the Karakoram puts the rest of the world's mountain ranges to shame. Neighboring Nepal has Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, but Pakistan has four of the world's 14 peaks that soar to 26,246 feet above sea level, including the second highest mountain on earth, K-2.

Remo Masima operates a remote-controlled helicopter from the base camp of the Trango Summit in northern Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range.

(Credit: AP/Aurora Photos for Mammut, Corey Rich) Lama and Ortner said climbing the legendary Pakistan mountains was an amazing experience.

"Here there are so many mountains, and so many difficult mountains, and mountains that haven't been climbed," said Lama. "That's probably why the Karakoram is known as paradise for us."

This year has been particularly successful for Pakistan's climbing industry, which plummeted in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in the U.S.

In addition to hosting the renowned Lama for the first time, Nazir Sabir, Pakistan's elder statesman of climbing who was the country's first person to scale Everest, said 30 climbers summited K-2 in 2012, the first summits from the Pakistani side of the mountain since 11 people died trying in 2008.

And the drone footage obtained during Lama and Ortner's climb will expose even more viewers to the legendary Karakoram mountain range.

Drones also increasingly are being used in other adventure sports to push conventional photography boundaries. Cameras on drones have been used to capture video of surfers on Hawaii's North Shore and to chase mountain bikers speeding down mountain trails.

"I've filmed anything from kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, to track and field to just casual walking," said photographer and videographer Mike Hagadorn, who has begun to build his own drones to support his Colorado-based firm, Cloud Level Media. "Anything you can dream of ? and as long as you don't crash ? you can make it happen."

Experts predict drone cameras eventually will become an integral part of every sports shoot. But for now, they're definitely a novelty. The Swiss team filming Lama said villagers in Pakistan stood in awe, staring at the drones as they buzzed around, whenever he used one on the expedition.

"We were trying to do this shot that showed this quaint village," Rich said. "But every single person in the shot is standing, stopped in the street, looking up at the helicopter."

Chavez's record: an oil bonanza squandered?

On the streets of Caracas, vast slums blanket the hillsides while squatters hang laundry in the windows of abandoned buildings. Trash-strewn alleys are riddled with potholes and lined with broken streetlamps. The city's main waterway, the polluted Guaire River, is known more for sewage than swimming.

While oil has ushered in spectacular construction projects for glittering Middle Eastern cities, including the world's tallest building in Dubai and plans for branches of the Louvre and Guggenheim museums in Abu Dhabi, it's brought relatively meager changes to Venezuela, which holds the world's largest proven oil reserves.

Nearly 14 years after President Hugo Chavez took office, and despite the biggest oil bonanza in Venezuela's history, there's little outward sign of the nearly one trillion petrodollars that have flowed into the country.

Venezuela has undoubtedly changed during Chavez's tenure. The populist president has used the oil wealth to buttress his support through cash handouts, state-run grocery stores and a gamut of other social programs. With more money in the economy, incomes are higher and the number of people living in poverty has fallen.

Unemployment has dropped from more than 13 percent in 1999 to about 8 percent. The country has also achieved rapid improvement on the U.N. Human Development Index, which measures a range of indicators from living standards to life expectancy.

"We're applying a successful program - successful politically, successful socially, successful economically," Chavez said at a news conference. "With flaws, of course, but it's successful. We're laying the foundations of a historic project that will take our entire lifetime."

All of which makes him a tough incumbent to beat in the upcoming Oct. 7 election.

Yet some experts say Chavez could have done much more to improve the country's infrastructure, boost its economy and invest in the very oil industry that keeps Venezuela afloat.

"It's overwhelmingly clear that Venezuela has wasted the windfall," said Francisco Monaldi, an economist and director of the International Center of Energy and the Environment at Caracas' IESA business school. "You should have had much greater economic growth, much greater reduction of poverty."

Among Latin American countries, the economies of Brazil, Chile, Peru and Argentina all have expanded more rapidly than Venezuela's since Chavez took office in 1999, recording average growth between 3 and 5 percent a year.

Venezuela, by contrast, averaged a 2.8 percent annual increase of gross domestic product between 1999 and 2011, according to International Monetary Fund figures. By that measure, the country was outperformed by every other member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries except Libya. Even war-torn Iraq posted higher growth.

Some Venezuelans, such as tennis instructor Naybeth Figueroa, say Chavez has simply channeled money toward his "Chavista" supporters while neglecting deeply ingrained problems such as soaring murder rates, inflation, crumbling infrastructure and poor government services. Venezuela now ranks among the most violent and corrupt places on earth.

"The country is falling to pieces," Figueroa said. "Where is the oil money going?"

Where the money went

On a rutted unpaved road in the countryside outside Caracas, unemployed housewife Moreli Gonzalez lives in a shack with a dirt floor and walls made of rusting sheets of zinc. She is thankful to Chavez that she now receives a $280-a-month cash benefit through a program called "Mothers of the Neighborhood Mission."

Key immune cell may play role in lung cancer susceptibility

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Why do many heavy smokers evade lung cancer while others who have never lit up die of the disease? The question has vexed scientists for decades.

Now, new research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis suggests a key immune cell may play a role in lung cancer susceptibility. Working in mice, they found evidence that the genetic diversity in natural killer cells, which typically seek out and destroy tumor cells, contributes to whether or not the animals develop lung cancer.

The research is published in September in Cancer Research.

?Overall, humans are genetically very similar but their immune systems are incredibly diverse,? explains senior author Alexander Krupnick, MD, a thoracic surgeon at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. ?Our findings add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that innate differences in immunity may determine not only a person?s susceptibility to colds but also to lung cancer.?

Based on the findings in mice, Krupnick says he and his colleagues now are studying whether humans have a similar genetic diversity in their natural killer cells. As part of a new clinical study, they?re analyzing the blood of heavy smokers with and without lung cancer and never-smokers with and without lung cancer to look for differences.

?We want to know whether heavy smokers who don?t get lung cancer have natural killer cells that are somehow better at destroying newly developing lung cancer cells,? says Krupnick, associate professor of surgery. ?And, by comparison, do patients who have never smoked but develop lung cancer have weak natural killer cells??

For the mouse study, the scientists evaluated three groups of mice with varying susceptibilities to lung tumors. After the mice were exposed to a carcinogen that causes lung cancer, one group readily developed the disease while another showed little evidence of the tumors. A third group experienced moderate tumor growth.

When the researchers depleted natural killers cells from the mice using an antibody, those that had been resistant to lung cancer developed large, aggressive tumors.

Further, in mice susceptible to lung cancer, the scientists showed that manipulating the immune system with a bone marrow transplant could significantly block the development of lung cancer. Their studies indicate that natural killer cells, not other types of immune cells like T cells or inflammatory cells, are responsible for this phenomenon.

In other types of cancers, including those of the breast, colon and prostate, T cells are capable of destroying tumor cells. But in lung cancer, scientists suspect that T cells become inactivated, which may give natural killer cells a more prominent role.

The researchers also traced the genetic diversity of the natural killer cells in the mice to a region of chromosome 6, which includes numerous genes that influence the effectiveness of these cells.

Moving forward, Krupnick and his team want to learn whether natural killer cells influence lung cancer susceptibility in people. ?We need to identify those patients who are resistant to lung cancer and ask, ?What is unique about their natural killer cells ? are they more potent or do they produce more of them than people with lung cancer?? The answer will determine our next steps.?

The research is supported by the ATX/Lungevity Foundation, the Alvin Siteman Cancer Center Internal Research Grant by the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health (KO8CA131097) and Biostatistics Core (P30 Ca091842), the Rheumatic Diseases Core Center NIH (P30 AR48335), National Institutes of Health (1R01HL094601), The Barnes-Jewish Foundation, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin, Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education and the generous support of the Charlotte and Sheldon Rudnick.

Reds clinch playoff spot minus manager Dusty Baker

CHICAGO (AP) ? Dusty Baker was missing when the Cincinnati Reds became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot. The main man in the dugout was sidelined Thursday for a second straight game after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.

"Obviously we won the last two games for him. We have him in our thoughts, but we got good news on his update," reliever Sean Marshall said after a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

"Hopefully he'll be back with us tomorrow and when it really matters, when we clinch (the division). Hopefully we get to celebrate this weekend with him," he said.

Ace Johnny Cueto and the NL Central leaders ensured themselves of at least a wild-card spot. Cincinnati cut its magic number to two for winning the division for the second time in three years.

The Reds said Baker would remain in a Chicago hospital for an additional day so doctors could monitor his progress. The manager left Wrigley Field before Wednesday night's game and underwent another test Thursday.

Baker is expected to return to Cincinnati on Friday. Bench coach Chris Speier ran the team for a second straight game.

"He looked good. Very good. He'll be there tomorrow," said general manager Walt Jocketty, who visited Baker on Thursday morning. Jocketty said he didn't know if Baker would be able to manage when the Reds open a series at home against the Dodgers.

"''Chris Speier did an excellent job, but I think he's (Dusty) missed and we're looking forward to having him back, and more importantly, we're hoping for the best with his health," star first baseman Joey Votto said.

"I know he's excited and happy, just wish that he was here to partake in it, but he'll be back soon," Speier said.

Cueto (18-9) pitched six shutout innings as the Red completed a three-game sweep.

The Reds broke a scoreless tie by getting five straight singles off reliever Manuel Corpas (0-2) in the seventh during a five-run rally capped by Henry Rodriguez's two-run double.

Chicago starter Jason Berken allowed just two hits in six innings against a lineup missing most of the Reds' regulars.

"I was able to get a couple of jams, great defense behind me, stayed on the same page the whole game," Berken said.

Cueto gave up five hits with four walks and broke a three-game losing streak.

"I don't think that was the best stuff he's ever had. You can tell he might be getting a little tired at the end of the year or whatever, but I've seen him with a lot better stuff," Chicago manager Dale Sveum said.

The Cubs scored in the seventh on Anthony Rizzo's RBI single and in the eighth on Welington Castillo's fifth homer again. Rizzo had an RBI grounder in the ninth against Alfredo Simon, who pitched the final 1 1-3 innings for his first save in as many chances.

The Reds secured their second playoff appearance in three years despite having the back of their bullpen wiped out by injuries during spring training and losing their best hitter ? 2010 National League MVP Votto ? for nearly two months.

Baker did some of his best managing to pull them through.

His first challenge was cobbling together a bullpen after closer Ryan Madson tore an elbow ligament in spring training, ending his season. Setup men Nick Masset and Bill Bray also got hurt before the season opened.

Baker eased Aroldis Chapman into the closer's role, and the hard-throwing left-hander set a franchise record with 27 consecutive saves.

Baker also had to juggle his batting order and lineup after Votto tore knee cartilage and was sidelined on July 16. The Reds went on their best tear of the season without their top hitter, going 32-16 and taking control of the NL Central.

There was some good fortune, too. All five starters have made it through the season without injury, a franchise record. The Reds had to use a sixth starter only because of a doubleheader.

By the time September started, the Reds were firmly in control and counting down the days until they'd clinch.

"This is the first step," Jocketty said.

"''We've played very successful baseball this year, and we've competed with the best teams at a very high level," Votto added.

"We've done a lot of winning this year, but I think anything but setting the World Series as our standard, I think anything less would be selling ourselves short. ... That's our goal."

NOTES: Cueto's two strikeouts gave him a career-best 159. ... Reds 2B Rodriguez and CF Denis Phipps made their first career starts and SS Didi Gregorius started for just the fourth time. ... The Cubs stay home to play the wild card-contending Cardinals with Chris Carpenter (0-0) set to make his season debut against Chris Volstad (3-10). ... The Reds will start Bronson Arroyo (12-8) at home against the Dodgers' Joe Blanton (9-13) on Friday night. ... Berken, picked up on waivers from Baltimore earlier this month, struck out four batters in one inning ? the fifth Cubs pitcher to ever do that ? when Ryan Hanigan reached on a third strike wild pitch in the second.

Kindle Fire HD 7-inch rooted in spite of Amazon, unstoppable force meets the unhackable object (video)

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-inch review

We were worried there, for a minute. After code explorers found that Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 7-inch had both a locked bootloader and extra security measures, there was a brief concern that the pseudo-Android tablet might be very tough to hack. As it turns out, there was no reason to lose faith. Hashcode, Justin Case, Reverend Kyle and Sparklym3 from the XDA and RootzWiki forums have successfully rooted the smaller Kindle Fire HD in a repeatable form, giving anyone courageous enough to load ADB the control they want over the tablet they bought. Just remember the usual caveats if you choose to dive in: while the root isn't a lengthy process, as you'll see in the video after the break, there's still the ever-present risk of bricking the device should something go wrong. Having seen what can be done with the original Kindle Fire after a little tinkering, we're intrigued as to what happens with its more capable sequel.
